Please contact the office where you want counselling to arrange your first appointment.

We also have an email counselling service. (Please see 'what we offer')

Relate aren't just here for couples counselling - we frequently work with individuals (including young people), and often whole families to help  iron out the problems in the sometimes complicated relationships.  Our service is confidential.

We also offer workshops to help you develop the life skills you need at crucial times in your life - where you are thinking about getting married, having a baby, or starting out again after a relationship break up.  These workshops let you meet people in a similar situation and help you talk about the issues you might face and develop the skills to deal with them.

All our services are available regardless of marital status, race or ethnicity, age, social background, personal beliefs or sexual orientation.

What are we about?

Relationship Counselling:
When things go wrong, it may be natural to turn to family and friends for help, but they can sometimes take sides and not see the situation clearly. A Relate counsellor is impartial and can help you see what is really happening and why things are difficult. They may then help you to find a way forward that is right for you. We can provide counselling for you and your partner or for you on your own. We can help you if you are having problems and want to resolve them, if you want to separate or if your relationship has ended.
Domestic Violence:
One in four of our clients tell us about violence in their relationship. If you are being hurt or are afraid for your safety or the safety of your children, counselling with your partner may not be safe. You can come and see us on your own and we can help. Please talk to your counsellor or telephone your local office and ask to speak to someone in confidence. Please note that we do not offer legal, financial or medical advice. However, if you need these or any other services not offered by Relate, we may be able to suggest alternative sources of help.

Counselling for Young People ('Time to Talk')
We offer confidential counselling for young people between the ages of 11 and 25 who are affected by their parents' divorce or separation, are experiencing family relationship problems or perhaps having problems with others at school. Whatever the reason, 'Time to Talk' can provide a listening ear.
Psycho-Sexual Therapy (PST)
Many of us experience difficulties in our sexual relationships at some time or other in our lives. Sometimes things get better without help but sometimes you may need outside help.
Relate psycho-sexual therapists are experienced relationship counsellors who have had further specialised training which enables them to help people overcome their sexual difficulties. Whether you want to come as a couple or as an individual, our therapists are here to help.
Family Counselling:
We offer a service called 'Family Matters' to enable families to work their relationship problems out together.
Education & Learning:
We offer a range of specialist training and education programmes for individuals, schools, health professionals and commercial organisations.

Our Counsellors
Relate counsellors have all received specialised training in couple counselling. They undergo further training to specialise in areas such as family counselling and sex therapy. Relate is registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and strictly abides by the BACP Code of Ethics.
Payment. & Cancellations
When you contact Relate you will be registered, and generally you will be offered an initial consultation with a counsellor within a week or two.
The cost of this first session is normally £35. You will be asked to pay for this appointment in advance if possible. In this initial session you will have the opportunity to discuss the issues that have brought you to Relate, and the counsellor can explain what you can expect if you return for ongoing counselling (usually once a week or fortnightly if this more suitable.)
You can attend on your own or with your partner. In this session, your counsellor will also discuss your payment for ongoing counselling. The cost to Relate of each session is about £50, but we are aware that many of our clients cannot afford this, and your circumstances will be taken into account when you negotiate your level of payment.
We ask clients to pay for their sessions in advance because missed appointments cost us more than we can afford as a charity. If you have to cancel an appointment with less than 48 hours' notice you will normally be charged a cancellation fee of £20.
Confidentiality
All counselling takes place in private, and records are always kept secure. We never divulge any details to anyone without your permission, unless someone, especially a child or vulnerable adult, is at risk. Your details and records at Relate are subject to the Data Protection Act 1998.
Specific Requirements
Please let us know when you register with us if you require any specific assistance so that we can make the appropriate arrangements. We can also provide information in Braille, large print or audio tape. Please note that our premises do not have childcare facilities.
